I've been plowing these fields for many a moon
built a nice house - dirt floors, two rooms
and I was walking home, beneath the evening sky
I seen that old ranch hand - he would not let me by
He said 'stop boy! - take the long road around!'
but he looked mighty nervous as he tried to stare me down
Same man who used to hang slaves who ran away
Same man who put babies in the river as gator bait
And those screams
those screams those cries
Stayed in my mind
So it's hard to sleep sometimes
So I walked away
as if going towards town
and when he stopped watching
I ran home on the ground
I passed the old barn
heard a noise from inside
and as I walked closer
my eyes went so wide
Two men on my lady
doing the worst kind of harm
'Cuz one held her body
while his friend restrained her arms
And oh - she screamed
she screamed she cried
Burning my ears and my soul
and my pride (2x)
With machete in hand
I stayed close to the ground
My lady was watching
so she kicked one man down
I cut his throat
and killed his friend while he died
She wiped her tears
and said oh they gon' skin us alive
(I said) 'burn the house, head south
and forget me or try'
and they'll follow my trail
and I'll run 'till I die
Oh she screamed
she screamed she cried
Sayin' if you go
why can't I?
She screamed
she screamed she cried
Sayin' if you go
why can't I?
Oh our dreams
they drowned in our eyes
Until we heard that train coming
off in the night.
